Way up in Appenzell

Friday, October 5,  2012

We left Bonndorf, Germany today shortly after 8 a.m. for what was top be a 2 hour drive to Appenzell, Switzerland but as has been the case the time allotted stretched into more like 5 hours.  About an hour northwest of Appenzell, we passed a large COOP grocery store so decided to stop there for lunch.  Another motive for stopping too was that the large COOP stores have WiFi connection so we were able to get and send some e-mails - something we were unable to do for the past week in Bonndorf.

Arrived here in Appenzell about 1:30 p.m. and were not able to get into our apartment here at the Fassler - Dorig farm until 4 so we had some time to kill.  We walked around town for several hours, first going to the TI office for maps and info on places to see and things to do in the area.  The TI office printed out a map of the road up to the farm here.  The Mrs. here said to call her if we had trouble finding their place - well the GPS did not have such an address listed so.  She would meet us in town and show us the way to their farm.  Now we understand why - it is way up here in the clouds - a beautiful view out our front window of the town of Appenzell and surrounding mountains.

A one lane paved roadway up here for about 4 km out of town, we had to stop several times as 2 of us cars squeezed by on the road with the edge falling off sharply - mostly on Jean’s side, which made her grab the hand hold - as sure sign that she is uncomfortable with the situation.

It is a beautiful view from up here and with the sun tomorrow hopefully should make for some great hiking pictures.
